Placement of Puppies

Whenever we receive an inquiry from someone interested in puppies, we ask a lot of questions. It's very important that we have a good understanding of each potential owner's situation. We need to get a sense of their daily routine, the role they have in mind for the dog in their lives and the type of environment that the dog will be entering.

Whether they grow up to be shown for conformation, used for hunting, trained for agility competion, service or therapy work -- or simply become wonderful family pets, our primary concern is that they go to safe and happy home environments.

We are sometimes asked by prospective buyers if they can pick out their puppy from the litter. If during a visit, a buyer feels a strong chemistry with a particular pup, we will certainly take that into consideration in making our decision, but in general, the answer is "No." We consider it an important part of our job to have each puppy independently tested for form and temperament and then use that information to match each buyer with their ideal dog.

All litters have been evaluated using the method of Pat Hastings, author of " The Puppy Puzzle " The puppy evaluation is performed when the puppies are eight weeks of age by a group of qualified poodle breeders and AKC judges.

If a caller expresses an interest in obtaining a dog for breeding, we do not sell them a pup. We make every effort to ensure that our puppies do not end up used and abused in a "puppy mill." Puppy mills are sadly all too common these days. We sell our pups with limited registration, with a spay/neuter contract.

Canine Bonding

It is so important for puppies to get adequate bonding time in with their mother, litter mates and other important dogs in their lives. These puppies learn to inhibit their bite by playing with their siblings. They learn to groom themselves and others from being lovingly groomed by their mom. They know to be gentle with humans from having been handled with soft paws and lips and tongue by their mom. They make direct eye contact, soft connection with their people from having witnessed their mother and other family members give that kind of eye contact themselves. Taking a puppy too soon from a litter prevents proper growth. It is for this reason that we don't let puppies out until 8 weeks of age at the earliest and will keep them much later to get them through the routine fear period that follows up until week 12.

AKC Registration

We provide all new owners with a limited AKC registration. Those who plan to show their dog for conformation and thus require a full AKC registration should feel free to contact me about this.

Availability

We only breed 1 or 2 litters a year. Litters range from 1 to 5 puppies. We always keep a puppy and then any show/performance buyers will be next in line, followed by companion buyers.

We do keep a waiting list of prospective buyers which are contacted when a puppy is available.

We require a $250 deposit if the pup is to stay with us after 10 weeks of age.

Miniature Poodles from genetically tested bloodlines are not priced the same as pups found in pet stores, internet or in newspapers or pet magazines. Prices are based on the expenses incurred before the breeding, during the pregnancy and post whelping and raising of the pups. Kalein Poodles have a very recognizable pedigree of champions and several generations of health tested dogs.
