- welcomes inquiries about their breed whether or not they have puppies available
- keeps dogs in the home as part of the family
- has dogs that are happy and healthy and that are eager to meet people
- shows you where the dogs spend their time -- an area that is clean and well maintained
- encourages you to spend time with the parents of the puppy and to visit as often as you wish
- breeds only one or two breeds of dogs and is knowledgeable about the breed standard
- has a strong relationship with their veterinarian. Keeps records of the puppies veterinary visits, medical history and explains what vaccinations your puppy will need
- will have all breeding dogs tested for any inheritable genetic disorders in the breed and will have copies of the results available for you to see
- gives you guidance on how to care and train your puppy and will be available for any questions as the puppy grows
- feeds high quality 'premium' dog food
- doesn't always have puppies available but will rather keep a list of potential new owners
- actively competes with their dogs in some form of dog events such as conformation, obedience, agility, tracking, etc.
- actively involved in local breed and all-breed clubs
- will not let their puppies leave the home before eight weeks of age
